Harris stripped off his suit coat. He wasn’t leaving her alone to deal with this mess. Plus he liked how in charge she was. So different from earlier at the party. “What should I do?”

Sunee wrapped her hair in a bun and stuck pencils in it. She pulled a lab coat over her dress. “If you could gather the papers, I’ll find cleaning supplies.”

The woman who’d been out of place at his mother’s dinner table was in control, and it was—exciting. Too bad she couldn’t channel her in-charge behavior into small talk. Then his mother wouldn’t have been so disappointed. When he’d told his mother they had to leave the party, his mother had whispered, “Sunee could damage your career.”

His mother was probably right. He needed someone who could handle the pressure of the media and fundraising.

That apparently wasn’t Sunee.

He gritted his teeth. The problem of Sunee and his career wouldn’t be solved tonight.

He started in the corner, working around the broken glass and shoving shards into small piles.

Sunee returned with cleaning supplies.

Even though it was a bad situation, Harris enjoyed working side by side with her. “Were Ashe and my DNA results in your office?”

“The only copies of the report are at your house.” She swept the section of floor he’d cleared. “The samples are at the lab. But all the paperwork is in code.”

“Maybe they didn’t find what they were looking for,” he said quietly.

Her broom clattered to the floor. “Do you think this has something to do with you and Ashe?”

“I don’t know. Now that we know my mother was impregnated through an in vitro clinic, it doesn’t make sense.” He tipped his head. “Maybe it was drug seekers?”

“Why would anyone break into a research lab?” Sunee chewed on her lip. “And if it was drug seekers, why would they trash everything?”

“I wish I knew.” He set down the stack of papers and wrapped his arms around her.

She burrowed into his chest. The tension that had tightened his body since she’d sat across from him at dinner, eased. Peace settled over him. Sunee was safe.

“Let’s see what the police find,” he said. “Maybe they’ll get something off the videotapes.”

They cleared the floor of broken beakers and slides. Finally they could walk around the lab without crunching.

If this attack on Sunee was because of the genetic testing she’d done for them, he couldn’t drop her off at her apartment and leave her alone. “It’s midnight. How about we call it a night?”

She looked around her lab. “You’re right. I’ll spend the weekend reorganizing and figuring out what equipment needs replacing. I hope the scope is okay.”

The microscope was dented, but nothing looked twisted or broken. He muscled it upright.

Sunee called the security department. “I’m leaving my lab.”

On the way to the parking lot Harris took her hand. “You shouldn’t be alone tonight.”

“I know we talked about me going home with you, but we’re both tired.” She slipped into the passenger seat.

“We don’t know who broke into your lab.
